Ever since joining the VJlondon gatherings in London I’ve wanted to have a similar thing happening in my home town, Sydney.

Plug’n'Play Sydney (which I’d been to before going to London) is/was similar, but the last Plug’n'Play “VJ Cafe” was just over a year ago now.

Just recently I discovered another group in Sydney called Immersants on Meetup.com, run by DJ sqgl, who has also founded Share Sydney.

Sydney branch of SHARE.global which provides support & infrastructure for new media communities worldwide. A place to experiment.

I went to meet them at an event called Thing In The Park (Facebook, Meetup), held under the light rail arches in the park down by the water in Glebe, and again at a Multimedia Jam (Facebook, Meetup, Ning) held at the Red Rattler Theatre in Marrickville.

sqgl is apparently going to be heading overseas soon, with perhaps one more multimedia jam type event before he goes, but since there is at least this small kernel of something going on, I see it as the time to try to build on it.

Getting venues can be a major problem; on that front, I have a friend who works at a venue in Surry Hills who is interested in starting up an open screens type thing – a place for visualists to get together to jam / practice / teach / learn /share (details as yet only so far as a phone conversation) to encourage a presently barely-existent art form in Sydney.

The number of people that I know in Sydney who are into visuals / VJing /etc is quite small, so I’m doing a call out here to see who else is around. Perhaps there are other networks to join with.

Speaking to sqgl, he is open to morphing (sorry Grant!) the Share Sydney group into another name/group, such as Plug’n'Play Sydney; the idea isn’t to take over or take away from any existing group(s), but to seek them out and collaborate.

Please give a shoutout here and/or drop me an email to get in contact. Links to other groups in/around Sydney are most welcomed.

Philogresz aka Ilker Soylu was born in that huge metropolis of Turkey Istanbul at the beginning of the 80′s!

In the summer of 2002 he moved to The Netherlands and started his education of music production at Art Academy of Utrecht (HKU) and later stage SAE (School of Audio Engineering). Soon after he has set up his own company 078 Productions and has been working as a promoter for more than 5 years which had to end depending on his passion for music productions, performance and recordings.

Philogresz’ sound is moody, melodic, jazzy and organically composed; yet it is arrogantly arranged techno with absolutely no boundaries. Confident enough to experiment on stage with complex beats and percussive lines, he achieves his intention of moving people with his subtle style.

He has so far put out our records on labels (selected):
WARE, Night Drive Music, 3rd Wave, Perplex, Manual, Stolen Moments, Magnitude, Sound Architecture, and his own imprint TEAM records.

Currently he is responsible for label and A&R management of TEAM Records started by Dutch techno producer Secret Cinema/Grooveyard. As an artist he has released ‘Debut on Blackwarm EP‘ including remixes by Secret Cinema and Qbical, which had numerous overwhelming reviews on International Media, including DJ Broadcast, Ibiza Voice, Beatfreax and The Clubbing.

In the past years, he presented himself as a producer of the deeper moods of techno and got the attention of: Dubfire, Luciano, Sasha, Ricardo Villalobos, Martin Eyerer, Joris Voorn, Karotte, Steve Lawler, Rejected, Rulers of the Deep, Tyler Stadius, Matthias Schaffhäuser, Laurent Garnier and many more.

Sat 12/Dec/09

Running since early 2006, TECHnique has become the home of quality free underground techno in Sydney. Not locked into one style, TECHnique continues to showcase talent from across the entire spectrum of tech-fuelled electronica. Together with Jandal, presenting a night of extravagance from the freshest producers, live acts and DJs across both Australia and Aotearoa.

An evening of lush chords, percussive funk and bassline tectonics in the renowned and intimate confines of Sydney’s Civic Underground.

SIMON FLOWER – Poker Flat/Moon Harbour (Live)

Proving that a little isolation can go a long way… residing in the far-flung islands of New Zealand has done nothing to hinder Flower scoring a stream of releases, collaborations and remixes on prestigious labels like Poker Flat, Moon Harbour, Dessous, Compost Black, Highgrade, and Curl Curl. His music scores highly with critics, punters and DJs alike and is frequently played by the likes of Steve Bug, Josh Wink and Anja Schneider to name a few. Since the early 90’s Simon has been busy producing, promoting parties, running his own successful record label ‘Nurture’ and tastefully blurring the lines of art, extended partying and exquisite music composition to perfection.

Fresh from an abundance of memorable performances all over Europe and at legendary clubs like the Liquid Room in Tokyo, Fabric London and most recently Watergate, Berlin for the Poker Flat Ten Year Anniversary – Flower performs in Sydney exclusively live at the Civic Underground.

SIMON CALDWELL

The evening’s main support comes from one of Sydney’s most talented and versatile DJ’s. Throughout the 12 years he’s been playing records to beer drinkers, bum shakers and radio listeners alike, Caldwell has championed a wealth of musical genres and respective timeslots by keeping himself free to draw on his varied loves of deep, soulful house, techno, funk, jazz, electro, booty, hip hop and anything else which catches his ear. From his legendary sets as resident of Mad Racket, Sydney to five-hour epics at Melbourne’s Honky Tonks and successful appearances throughout Europe, Caldwell consistently displays why he is truly one of Australia’s top-shelf DJs and more than capable of crafting a perfect warm-up set.

MATT DRAKE (NZ)

Groundbreaking, body-rocking cuts spliced, melted and served in a seamless sonic sauce has made Drake one of New Zealand’s most innovative dance-floor talents. A staple support act for house & tech DJs who has played alongside: Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Derrick May, Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson, Audion, Michael Mayer, Booka Shade, Steve Bug, Claude VonStroke, Claude Young, Stacey Pullen, Deetron, Ben Sims, Adam Beyer, Christian Smith, Cari Lekebusch, Mike Grant, Dirt Crew, DJ T, Stimming, Tom Clarke, M.A.N.D.Y, Ame and HEAPS more. Pity the fool that misses one of the Drake’s infamous sets of machine-funk and sexy, jacking minimalisim – the same sets that have been putting the worlds best to shame for 17 years!

KANE BLIGH

A Sydney residing Kiwi with one foot in Brazil and the promoter behind Musica – a Sydney benchmark for quality clubbing with past guests including Timo Mass & Lee Burridge and a series of consummate events set to return in 2010. A stalwart of both the Sydney and São Paulo scenes, Kane will be cheekily keeping things rolling, keeping it liquid and locked deep until close.

Opening live support from Dane Austin (Midi in the City/Crescent Music) kicks off at 10pm.

This month TECHnique is proud to present one of the Sydney’s most prolific selectors: Simon Caldwell. Simon is one of a handful of DJs whose name adds a certain integrity to an event. Since the early 90’s he’s been playing records to beer drinkers, bum shakers and radio listeners alike, he has managed to avoid the stifling ‘style’ classification so many other DJ’s trap themselves into, keeping himself free to draw on his varied loves of deep soulful house, techno, funk, jazz, electro, booty, hip-hop and anything else which catches his ear.

Andrew Wowk plays a variety of sounds from across the spectrum of house and techno, as well as splashes of dubstep, drum and bass and experimental/electronica.Andrew also devotes his time to promotion. He is currently co-promoting Fresh Meat in the Cave at the Chinese Laundry, and was previously involved in Subservice and Eat Musik, which featured guests such as Danny Bonnici (Melbourne), Rollin’ Connection (Melbourne), Dave Pham (Melbourne), Dean Millson (Melbourne) and Kriece (Perth).

Alphatown have played alongside such world class artists as Derrick May, Mr C and Ben Sims, at the Big Day Out and as residents at the infamous Tech-ni-kal nights at Sydney’s Chinese Laundry. Not to mention many, many gigs (big and small) with Sydney’s best: people like the Mad Racket crew, Future Classic, Hi-Jinks, Biz E, Lorna, Mako, Meem, Motech and all the others whose support and encouragement have been vital ingredients in the band’s success. The Alphatown boys have spent most of the winter locked away in the studio, and as always have a whole new swag of material that they’re positively itching to unleash on receptive ears.

A night of free techno-laced electronica for the Sydney massive massive – our gift to you.

After a long cold winter in semi hibernation, we decided the first TECHnique of Summer 09 we should do something a little special and invite two special guests along to our humble little bestfest. First cab off the rank is a man that no introduction could do justice. Pushing the decks to one side and treating us to a heaped helpin’ of live techno, Sydney’s production juggernaut Biz.

Then…

Biz is one of Australia’s pioneer DJs/producers, and has been a key player in the game since the days of acid house. He has had the chance to work with over 50 of the world’s greats from Richie Hawtin, Derrick May, Carl Cox, Laurent Garnier, through to Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Aphex Twin and just about every other DJ/producer who has made their mark over the last two decade in the world of techno. As a producer, Biz has released over 20 records worldwide through UK and European distributors and has been charted by the likes of Villalobos, Dave Clarke and Derrick May. In 2005 he remixed Green Velvet’s La La Land for Ministry of Sound, and later in that year did a CD release for Wetmusik. He has run three record stores over the last decade and compiled releases for labels such as Force inc and Detroit’s legendary Submerge. He has worked with Roland promoting their dance product and he also promoted the legendary Flash parties, events that introduced Sydney to the pioneering artists of Detroit and awarded 3D’s Party of the Year twice. Touring greats such as Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Carl Craig, Claude Young, DJ Godfather and DJ Rolando. He also ran Chinese Laundry’s club night Tech-ni-kal for two years which was the southern hemisphere’s equivalent to Berlin’s Tresor.

Now…

Currently Biz is concentrating 100% on getting his music out there and has a distribution deal for his label cliq with DJ Godfather’s Electrobounce in Detroit. He has also started up label Machinemusik to coincide with his Music software training studio in Darlinghurst. All releases are available through Beatport. His current release on cliq was number one on Dave Clarke’s top ten techno chart.
